Comparing the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 VR with the Canon 24-70L f2.8 II: The Nikon lens has slightly sharper extreme corners wheras the Canon lens has slightly better center sharpness. Both lenses are truely excellent. Having VR is an advantage that comes with significant extra size, so the right choice depends on your preferences.

All Nikon's F mount 70-200 f/2.8 lenses, both G and E type, are AF-S (built-in focus motor), not screw drive. All AF-S lenses will autofocus with the FTZ adapter, so the OP's lens will be fully functional. The replacement 24-70 is also an AF-S G type. Thanks again for all the support provided.
Cutting-edge optics for maximum definition. The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR produces images that have a life of their own. Six ED glass elements, Fluorite (FL) and High Refractive (HRI) lens elements and Nano Crystal Coat (N) all but eliminate distortion and glare and maximize contrast and sharpness, even in difficult backlit situations.
I utilize the Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8 as well as the Nikkor 70-200MM F2.8 VR extensively and can say that the 24-70 does not need the VR as it would not make much difference at that low a focal length. The VR on the 70-200 does come in use at the longer focal lengths but I rarely use it for the following reason
